During the entire period of 1999-2001 South India received no rains and many parts experienced water shortages. Ground water levels dipped, wells ran dry and there was an acute shortage of drinking water.
Sri Sakthi Amma quickly purchased four large tankers and continuously supplied drinking water to the rural areas around Vellore. An average of 90,000 liters was distributed each day to the people, for three weeks each year. As the water table had dropped, many were engaged in digging deeper wells and implementing rainwater harvesting. In conjunction with this, donations were made to several institutions to improve both water supply and sanitation facilities to create a streamlined system for basic necessities, leading to a healthy and hygienic environment.
