Anna=Food; Dhanam= Giving in charity. Among all dhanams (Charities) Annadhanam is considered the best.
The word Annadhanam in Sanskrit literally means offering or sharing food. The importance of food is stressed in ancient scriptures including Vedas and Upanishads. The Dharma Sastra regards the guest as a ‘deity’ (Athithi Devo Bhava). This is in keeping with the worldwide belief among ancient society that god may move upon the earth in human guise and that one should therefore regard fellow beings with almost courtesy, respect and hospitality, including the offering of food. Annadhanam is conducted with this principal in mind.
Amma’s food donation projects go by the name ‘Narayani Seva’ (Service to Narayani). All those who come to the Peedam and participate in the daily activities are provided with a meal. In addition, ‘Prasadam’ is served to all devotees visiting Sripuram Temple. Narayani Seva is conducted at various towns and cities by the devotees of Sri Sakthi Amma to provide for those in need.
Sri Sakthi Amma’s philosophy on Annadhanam Shri Sakthi Amma initiated this programme in the early days of his life with the meager amount given by the devotees as offerings. In Amma’s philosophy, it is only to food human beings can say enough as true reflection of satisfaction. Any other material benefit can be hoarded meaninglessly. Therefore Annadhanam is an event of satisfying the devotees – poor and rich alike who sit side by side and have a nutritious and complete meal. Amma conducts Annadhanam immediately after Mangala Narayani at Sri Narayani Peedam. The tasty food given in the Peedam by Narayani Seva is relished by all alike.
